A Crucible's Lore: The role of women

When it comes to women, I've good news and bad news for my beloved fellow S'poreans. The bad news is this. The good news, on the other hand, is only for cynical bastards like yours truly.

Maybe I should try making a constructive effort in becoming a better human being. Not that it's gonna work anyway. Until then, I give you Ciri. Also, I need to promote gender equality. Hence, this video below.

Note: Above vid actually gave me quite a bit to think about in terms of tweaking the control interface of the video game/JRPG version of A Requiem From Winter Past.

Add note: The contents of this post excludes the non-human races for a reason. It's called being practical. After all, being an anti-typical S'porean doesn't mean I'm some mindless rebel against the Singaporean way.

Lore focus: The role of women
Origin:
Since the days of yore, the distinctive difference between man and woman has been an integral aspect of every civilisation and society. From the barbaric practice of treating women as property to respect being paid to equality, the role of women varies from one people to another. After the War of the Three Thrones, the role of women differs from one nation to another among the Causaceans. At the same time, different cultures do beget different standards and ways.

How women are treated in the Kalaran Empire:
Under the ethos of meritocracy known as the Kalaran Dream, women are faced with a contradictory situation. On one hand, they are encouraged to further themselves either academically or in their respective expertise. Upon marriage, however, their role would be that of a mother educating her children. For those who are better off financially, they can afford to hire maidservants known as maidwives to look after their children as these married women tend to assume important roles in their husbands' careers, be it an advisory or a supporting position. Those who are not so fortunate are resigned to a fate of the common smallborn woman: That of a mother looking after her family while the husband is off to work.

Within the nobility, women can never assume any position of power bar a political crisis allowing one to capitalise. Causaceans view the role of women to be either the submissive half or the supporting half. As such, having a female ruler is bound to invite mockery. Women within the nobility may be enviable to some, but the reality is quite the reverse. At least the baggage of being a smallborne means having the freedom to chase the Kalaran Dream. Those within the four walls of royalty and nobility are not so fortunate.

Then there are those who are looked down upon due to their professions. Not every woman is fortunate enough not to end up in a brothel. Even tavern wenches who would never sell their bodies tend to be sniggered upon. While prostitution is legal, the large bulk of brothels are found in areas known as nether regions. Nether regions tend to be unmanageable, for every manner of vice both imaginable and otherwise can be discovered there. Therefore, bribery is always the second best way to avoid any trouble with the law with not getting caught as the most optimal approach. Originally intended as a plan to house the poorest and homeless, certain events conspired to make sure things turned out this way.

In the Empire, prostitution and adultery, while deemed morally wrong, are considered not illegal. For adultery, however, the husband is expected to divorce his wife without any payment bar the clothes on her back. Failure to do so would result in social contempt for the husband and his parents more than the woman herself. In the event of any divorce resulting from any reason apart from infidelity, the husband is required to give his divorced wife a sum of money in accordance to the number of years together under the imperial law. Also, polygamy is illegal before the imperial law.

How women are treated in the High Realm of Teutonia:
Women in Teutonia are always expected to be submissive. By that, it means submitting to her husband (if she is married) or to her father (if she is still single). The role of the father is to educate his children and sustain the family's livelihood. Therefore, an idle man is always a worthless man. Married women are in charge of the daily chores. Even for the rich ones and those of a lofty status, they are nothing more than matrons overseeing the servants. Yet, it must also be stated that if the man (or men for that matter) of the family requires help, the womenfolk are dutybound to help out together with the children.

Education wise, Teutonians allow their women to decide whether or not to pursue it. To men and women alike, education is a right, not a privilege. Therefore, women who can afford it would always enjoy the same right as their male counterparts while the poorer ones are encouraged to learn a craft or two, no matter how menial or artistic.

The Teutonians view rape as the greatest blasphemy (together with the act of intentional killing during any trial of arms) with indecent sexual conduct seen as a heinous offence. Even when it comes to the womenfolk of the enemy, they can only be enslaved for menial purposes. Once such blasphemies are committed, the culprits must be executed on the spot if caught in the act with an eye-witness carrying out the execution. Because every Teutonian man is dutybound to carry his weapon of choice once he reaches adulthood, such deeds tend to happen every now and then. However, the victim must present her own testimony in the court the next day. For the code of honour and duty binds both man and woman alike to be accountable for any human life intentionally lost. Should such cases be brought before the judge for whatever reason, the judge must deliver the final verdict if enough evidence is present. Otherwise, a trial of arms must be declared with the combat commencing on the third day after the declaration. In this case, intentional killing of the combatants is viewed as the highest level of sacrilege. As such, whoever is represented by the killer must be executed on the spot with no mercy given. No matter the outcome, every rapist is treated like one. Simply put, even a member of the royalty is never to be spared if found guilty.

Unlike the Kalaran Empire, Teutonia exercises a total ban on brothels as the Teutonians view any outward act of objectifying women as an act of abomination. Women accused and convicted of adultery (or just about any capital offence) are to be hanged in the same way men sentenced to death are to be decapitated. Like the Kalarans, the Teutonians practice monogamy.

How women are treated in the Free Land of Slarvea:
The Slarvs view meritocracy in the most direct manner. Leadership qualities such as wit and valour are the fundamentals of positive values. Unlike the Teutonians, the Slarvs never placed any emphasis on education (i.e. frivolous pursuit of frivolous things in their own words). Unlike the Kalarans, they have no regard for traditional morals and value (i.e. a frivolous worldview according to their own standard). So long the individual is brave enough, so long the individual is intelligent enough, so long the individual is capable of leading men and women alike in times of peace and conflict... such a person would be given the respect due. It doesn't matter (and neither should it be as well) to the Slarvs on whether the merit goes to a man or woman.

To the Slarvs, the only difference between a man and woman lies in the physical, mental, and emotional. How to make the most out of one's strengths while masking the weaknesses is what every Slarv would call the right of merit. Despite what others may think of them, the Slarvs are an intelligent people. Not so much in terms of cultivating civilisation, for they are a nomadic people. Rather, it is a strong sense of pragmatism in terms of using whatever at their disposal that makes them either a formidable ally or a fearsome foe.

Unlike the Kalarans and Teutonians, the Slarvs view sexual partners as a show of status. At the same time, marriage is an alien concept to them. Due to their absolute standard in terms of gender equality, this means men and women alike are entitled to this form of sexual freedom.

How women are treated in the Furthest East:
The Cinha view women as role models for the children while men are to be role models for male youths. As a result, Cinha women are always expected to behave in a manner becoming of themselves. This means being submissive towards their husbands (if married) and fathers (if single). No questions are asked in terms of decisions being made in the family, for the husband is the head of his family and the father the head of his household. In the event of death where the family head is concerned, the wife is to assume her husband's duty. For the worth of every household lies in the property owned and remarrying would mean a change of ownership. Something which goes against the values of the East. If there is no property owned, the widow is expected to remarry, those qualified being the male relatives.

While any form of premarital sex is considered adultery (a capital offence punishable by drowning), polygamy is an accepted practice so long formal marriage ceremonies are involved. Like the Slarvs, the number of concubines (i.e. wives taken apart from the first) is seen as a show of status. Unlike the Slarvs, this show of status is only applicable to men.

When it comes to justice for women, the Cinha judiciary system is considered strictly patriarchal, unfair even. While a convicted rapist would be sentenced to life in jail, failure to do convict the accused would result in dire consequences for the victim. Namely, the death sentence reserved for adultery automatically meted out without trial. At the same time, rape is considered a petty crime compared to a severe case of felony viewed by the Teutonians. Hence, a victim tends to remain silent with her father attempting to marry her off before the worst-case scenario happens. Namely, unwanted pregnancy. Needless to say, such pregnancy is considered the result of an act of adultery.

Ironically, for all the Cinha profess to be in terms of traditional family values, brothels are legal where prostitutes are considered no different from dogs and swine.

How women are treated in the Southland:
Every Sudhlit community is defined by a common caste system. The standard measured for the men is the same for the women. However, it must be stated that such a standard is drawn within the gender boundary rather than something universal. For example, a man of a higher status is always seen as more prestigious than a woman of the same caste rank.

Women are always seen as either one of the two: Wives and mothers or objects of sexual lust and abuse. Contrary to the popular belief, there is a difference between the two when it comes to treatment. Wives and mothers are to be respected even though the husband or father is always the head of his family. But for maidservants and female slaves, they do not have such a right. Instead, they are viewed as nothing more than commodities.

When it comes to cases of violence against female family members, however, the men would always have the last say. This is due to the Sudhlit belief that a woman's greatest virtue is submitting herself under the authority of her father or husband. In fact, positions of authority, no matter whether it is within or outside the family, are always given to the men.

How women are treated in Histalonia:
Histalonia is a place where the strong reign and the weak perish. Stopping short of actual anarchy, the Histalonian society is nothing more than a state of chaos brought under control. As a result, it is very easy for a woman to be preyed upon. When it comes to slavery, there is a special relationship between Histalonia and the Southland. The latter plays the role of the supplier while the former is to be the exporter. This is due to slavery being outlawed by the Kalarans and Teutonians while the Slarvs hold such a practice in contempt. Once the slaves (plus whatever goods involved as well) are sold to Histalonia, the resellers would always have their pick of female slaves before selling the rest at a profit. As the result, many are the women sold into slavery where this island nation of mercantile activities is concerned.

Yet, this is not to say exceptional women do not exist there. Like how male and female weaklings do exist, being a capable player does not have any gender requirements. In fact, the very few women who managed to carve out their own niche are commonly seen as more dangerous to deal with compared to their male counterparts. After all, the experience would always triumph over knowledge in a society where decisions must be made in a single moment.

How women are treated in Tamuria:
In the highland region of Tamuria, livelihood requires a hardy constitution and a resolve of steel. Instead of agriculture, the Tamurians sustain themselves via gathering and herding a species of mountain sheep known as argots. While the men task themselves with the hunting and foraging, the womenfolk busy themselves with looking after herds of argots. Every clan (i.e. a family according to the Tamurian standard) has at least one flock of argots depending on the clan size.

Because being a shepherdess involves fights against wild beasts and the occasional rapist, Tamurian women are traditionally garbed in leather and linen to facilitate mobility and just enough protection. At the same time, each of them is armed with a staff, dirk, and sling together with a pouch containing stones as ammunition.

Like the menfolk, every Tamurian woman is trained as a fighter since birth. The younger and unmarried ones tend to look after the livestock while older women (who are married or widowed) are tasked with training children in the ways of combat.

Honour is the most important virtue to any clan. For a woman, this is even more so. In the event of rape, the victim is entitled to the right to fight back. At the same time, she is also dutybound to kill the attacker. Regardless of the outcome, the victim would choose suicide via cutting the throat after the struggle. Not because of whatever rule enforced, but rather this is a fate every Tamurian woman chooses willingly. If the assailant managed to escape, the victim's course of action stays unchanged. However, she is to recount what happened to her family before committing suicide. In this case, the rapist would face a more gruesome fate upon being apprehended. No trial is to be conducted, for the offender would be sentenced to be hanged, drawn, and quartered. While other so-called more civilised people would recoil at such a sight, any Tamurian worth his or her own honour would argue this is a death sentence worthy of the worst of cowards.

When it comes to weapon usage, the Tamurian womenfolk favour lighter weapons like dirks, one-handed axes, and hunting bows while the men favour arms of heavier weight like the bardiche, longsword, and even the two-handed greatsword. This is to emphasise the Tamurian ethos of fire and wind. Fire refers to the male role of any Tamurian clan while wind refers to the female role. Like how fire is driven by the wind from behind, every daughter is to be the pride of her father while every wife is to be the pillar of her husband. Hence, the men will always fight at the forefront with the women acting as the foil. If the men are to be the shield, then the women are to be the spear. Such is how the roles of the respective gender work.

Some things of note:

1. While the part on the Causaceans sounds like the typical #AMTK logic, it must be stated that the influence to create a more "gentlemanly" white society has more to do with female fantasy characters like Polgara, the most famous Daenerys Targaryen, and the less famous Lyanna Stark. If this is proof of a local S'porean thinking like an angmoh, I'm not going to apologise for being myself.

2. It's very easy for my fellow S'poreans to call me a racist since I'm also a Singaporean Chinese. After, there's always an American in every one of us, no? However, it must be stated that local Singaporean Indians (be they Tamil, Punjabis, or any other South Asian descent) should never bear the sins of a rape culture because this is Singapore, not India. I need to clarify this because I know I can never be the kind of accidental hero Shrey Bhargava was/is.

3. The part on Cinha is essentially my take on the contradiction/hypocrisy surround the much-touted East Asian moral values. I'm not blind, I'm not an idiot. You can never convince me that the deer is a horse (i.e. there's a Chinese saying: 衣冠沐猴). Simply put, I'm not going to apologise for being a politically incorrect Scottish son of a gun blessed/cursed with a wolf's blood unless the S'porean educational system is willing to apologise for having a hand in creating this monster of a local S'porean. Simply put, #IMPOSSIBRU! no matter whether it's me or my country's educational system.

4. The combat role of Tamurian women mirrors that of the hoplite strike-behind-cover approach and classic Persian artillery barrage tactic.

5. At the point of writing this, the current Mediacorp drama starring Qi Yuwu and Jesseca Liu is airing an episode where Jesseca's character was... erm, drug raped by her ex-husband. Funnily enough, that episode unleashed my inner Monster of Ván (not to be confused with an "accidental mirror image" of yours truly), hence the inclusion of a rapist's death sentence Tamurian style.

6. Which now comes to the fact that the leader of the Valkyries is inspired by Jesseca Liu. The leader's name? Jeska Lews Brynhilda.

8. The argot, as an animal species, is inspired by a Greek kambing.

Above is the complete boss fight.

A Crucible's Lore: Wolves and... super wolves?

I will need to get my writing back to speed so as to speak. The good news, though, is that I'm currently on song now. At the very least, I feel that kicking myself to write something is requiring less of an effort. However, there's a catch. While I've yet to be proven a genius, I actually got a problem. There have been moments where noise can easily come from any member of my family. My dad and mum are fans of Chinese streaming vids while my sis is a fan of Korean streaming vids. While I've developed a mind of steel as the sole defensive measure, it doesn't prevent me from having this so-called drilling-against-the-wall sensation. Until those around me understand me, I'll have to keep going forward like an Archer. And speaking of Archer, the recent Golden Globes and Rose McGowan's ire (plus that of a few others) actually reminds me of... well, this vid below. For some weird reason, that is.

Either way, this song below will most likely feature in my next chapter of A Requiem From Winter Past.

Spoiler: The manliest man in anime-manga culture is still... well, a man. A broken man, no less.

Below video is for those who think I'm being too cynical. *shrugs*

Spoiler: Archer is still unable to break himself free from the power binding him.

Lore focus: Wolves
Origin:
There are those who say the world is nothing more than a dream, something materialised by slumbering gods. Whether such people are sages or madmen, no one knows. Of all the creatures existing, there are those seen as objects of taboo. For instance, crows are associated with death. Therefore, the sight of one during any wedding ceremony is always seen as an ill omen amounting to divorce or death. Then, there are wolves. Always associated with evils of every kind, be they lesser, greater, or middling, wolves have been the fulcrum of nightmarish tales. From children devoured to maidens ravished unto even how the world will end, these creatures have been effectively used as a deterrent to the wayward individual. Perhaps in an attempt to mock the self-righteous, there is a common saying amongst sellswords: A wolf knows best every man.

Physique:
An average wolf on fours stands at slightly below hip level. However, larger ones are known to stand as tall as at the waist level. One wolf's body weight is more than enough to overpower an average human being, its jaws used for mauling and crushing bones. Wolves tend to hunt in packs ranging from ten to slightly less than twenty, their hunger always seemingly insatiable. Yet, their endurance is proven to be exceptional, to say the least. It is said that the least of any pack can go without food and water for a day or two while the stronger ones can last for slightly less than a week. Whether this has any grain of truth remains to be seen, for the human fear towards wolves understands no bounds.

Mannerism and lone wolves:
Like any beast and bird in the wild, wolves are fiercely territorial. The males are always ones doing the hunting, but the females are the ones protecting the den. Every pack has three tiers of hierarchy. The leader, also known as the alpha, leads the pack. The alpha is also the only member of the pack which has the right to mate and breed. As a result, the alpha male would always guard jealously every female member of the pack. The second tier is known as the beta. The role of a beta wolf serves as what a scholar would call a regent. Yet, it must be stated that the notion of a second-in-command is never existent in any pack. The alpha is the only authority in the pack. The beta's role is to take over the pack leadership in the event where the alpha is either dead or incapacitated (although the latter would always lead to the former). And that includes also the ownership over the females of the pack. The third tier is the gamma. This bottom level of the pack hierarchy refers to the rest of the pack, those who can only afford to follow the leader.

In terms of size, the alpha is always the largest and strongest. The beta will either be of the same size as the omega wolves or somewhere between the two. Either way, the beta is certainly the second strongest.

Lone wolves, on the other hand, are those driven from the pack. Also known as the omega, such a wolf tends to be a survivor of any power struggle where the loser was spared from death. In any pack, a code of honour is always practised. Strength represents two things: The right of leadership and the right of respect. For any omega, it is always the latter. But because insubordination is never an option, a rebel which has proven itself is forced to leave lest it gets attacked mercilessly by the rest of the pack.

Despite the apparent, lone wolves can easily be dangerous foes as one such animal is even more territorial than its peers. Left with nothing apart from the will to survive, such a beast is capable of putting up a fight more stubborn than any member of a pack or even a lion. As a result, hunters tend to shun wolves whenever they can. For neither dealing with the collective nor the individual is safe in every manner of the word.

How they hunt:
As hunters, wolves are known to be ferocious flankers. Unlike any type of pack felines, wolves do not rely on ambush. Instead, they would chase the prey after the alpha makes a howl. Experts in terrain navigation, every pack consists of two units. The first is known as the harrier unit. Always the majority half, the harrier unit is led by both the alpha and beta. The harriers are in charge of starting the chase and going for the kill. The second is known as the flanker unit. While flankers belong to the minority half, the timing of their attack in any hunt is always crucial to success. The flankers are never tasked with the killing the prey. Rather, their job is to either scatter or waylay (depending on whether the prey belongs to a group or a solitary one). Since leadership is always absolute in the pack, the flankers are only allowed to cripple the quarry with the harrier unit dealing the killing blow. In fact, scholars have recently started debating whether such an approach was the inspiration for cavalry tactics as we know it now.

Tactics:
Every hunt begins with a howl. This acts like a war horn where the call for battle is heard by both ally and foe. To maximise the efficiency of this call to hunt, the alpha is always seen standing on the high ground. Once the pack converges below the high ground, the alpha would descend from its perch, the hunt officially commenced.

Initially, both the harriers and flankers will run as a single unit. Should the hunt be in forest terrain, their aim will be to force the quarry into open ground, upon which the flankers will split from the pack. If it is in open terrain, then the flankers would be given free reign on when to split, the decision made seemingly in unison. If the prey is pursued on rocky ground, the flankers would move in advance in a separate unit.

Habitation and cultural impact:
Although never seen in the south due to its arid climate, wolves can be seen elsewhere. In the Furthest East, they are commonly seen at plains and plateaus. The same goes for those in Slarvea although Slarvean wolves tend to have bulkier physique compared to the athletic build of those in the land of Cinhas. In the Kalaran Empire, they are the least sighted due to civilisation expanding the fastest there. However, the Imperial Zoo still boast of a wolf or two. In the forests of Teutonia and mountains of Tamuria, the wolves thrive.

To the Cinhas, wolves are always hated. For they are commonly associated with avarice and political greed, two traits every Cinha detests most in any person. At the same time, Cinha superstitions have a very close association with animals where any form of contact would most likely result in the relevant reaction.

To the Tamurians, they are the symbol of individual strength and collective unity, two traits most appreciated in the Tamurian culture. As a result, Tamurians always leave behind the best portion of every kill for these creatures.

For the Causaceans, however, wolves are seen as more than dangerous critters needing to be culled. On one hand, the locals know too well the nightmarish tales, their minds and hearts accepting whatever told by minstrels and boasting bards. Farmers see them as a danger to their livestock and livelihood, a reaction rightfully warranted. Whether they are the main source of the aforementioned tales remains a subject of debate among intellectuals. Due to the farmers' woes, hunters see wolves as both a good chance to earn money while avoiding them if no reason for conflict can be found.

At the same time, wolves form an integral part of the Causacean culture. For instance, it is commonly said that Justicar Lleric I, the first ruler of the originally unified Causacea, was nursed by a female wolf which had lost her pups before finally adopted by a farmer's family. During his battles against the invading Tamurians and Sudhlits, he was tasked with commandeering the cavalry, his banner of choice being a howling wolf encircled by an olive wreath. In fact, the consensus among scholars is that even though there is no proof of any supernatural or emotional connection, the strategy employed by the wolves had served as an inspiration. Justicar Eylia, the only female ruler and fourth monarch of Causacea, was known to have a wolf's nature according to the historian Skopios Tacticus, a trait used to describe a headstrong and unruly personality. Her only son also inherited such a trait. Unlike his mother, this became the reason for his untimely death via an accident due to a dare. As a result, her husband, Consort Jak Valdis, had to protect the family via political machinations lest untimely disaster obliterated the royal lineage.

Lore focus: Timekeeping
Origin:
The concept of time is commonly believed as something inherent within any living being. In fact, the concept of time was widely synonymous with life and death during the Age of Renown. Just like there is a time for all things, there is a time for death to arrive. Just like how time progresses without turning back, such is every being's living years. Like how time waits for no one, the world has never revolved around any individual or entity. Therefore, it is still commonly said that time itself is, in essence, the soul.

How time is kept:
There are a few terms used. Namely, seconds, minutes, hours, days, cycles, months, seasons, and years.

Seconds are defined by brief moments. Examples include an arrow loosed, a short sprint, and fireworks going off. Minutes are defined by prolonged actions over a short period. Examples include pouring water from a pitcher, a short walk, and the average conversation duration. Hours are defined by prolonged actions over a longer period. Basically, anything being done within a day, yet not considered as over a short period, fits the standard. Due to the difference in perception in every individual, it must be stated that one person's standard in terms of minutes and hours can differ greatly from another. As for seconds, however, the consensus is there due to a common view on what defines the truly brief. Be it second, minute, or hour, usage of singular and plural is always interchangeable as the understanding of time in this context is nothing more than a concept.

A day is defined by the sun rising. Also known as the Eternal Courtship of Hati and Sköll in some quarters of the world, a day is only deemed to have ended once the sun rises again the second time. In other words, the presence of night is also included in a single day. Therefore, one must be discerning when understanding the concept of a single day, for it can mean either literally one or the presence of daylight.

A cycle is defined by seven days in total. A month is defined by four cycles in total. One season means three months while a year is made up of four seasons.

Four seasons and birthdays:
In Nordeas (i.e. what used to be the unified Causasea) and the Furthest East, a year is defined by four seasons. Spring lasts for the first three months. Summer lasts for the next three months. Unlike the first two seasons, autumn lasts for five months while winter lasts only for a month. Due to how the seasons last, winter is also known to be the harshest part of every year, a symbol representing the inescapability of death and the promise of life starting anew. For the same reason, autumn is also synonymous with the foreboding of all things coming to an end.

As for the concept of a birthday, how it is calculated differs from one people to another. For the Kalarans and Slarvs, a person's age is measured by the number of winters as winter is seen as the end of every year. For the Teutonians, age is defined by the number of summers as summer is seen as a symbol of being alive. For the Cinhas, age is calculated by the number of springs, for spring represents new beginnings.

For Tamurians and Sudhlits, age is merely stated according to the number of years. This is due to Tamuria and the South experiencing only the sun and moon.

Hati and Sköll:
Hati represents the night while Sköll represents the day. Despite not being widely used now, these two terms are still recognised as legitimate references. Interestingly, Hati is the male half of day itself while Sköll is regarded as the female half. This has baffled scholars for countless years as dawn is always seen as the dominant half while the night is the supporting half.

However, one theory which has become most widely accepted points to an unspecified era seeing night as the dominant half with dawn being the supporting half. Whether this is referring to the Age of Renown or any other era hence after remains a question waiting to be answered.

Lore focus: Vánagandr
Origin:
Where these beings hailed from is never known. While the racial enigma called the Vánagandr can be seen every now and then, it was only recent decades ago that they were officially recognised as actual beings instead of objects of mythology and speculated sightings. While history has never accounted for their origin, it is worthy of note that unofficial records of their existence were dated as early as the aftermath of the War of the Three Thrones. It was also an era where tales of demons first emerged albeit intellectuals have always derided such stories as old wives' tales meant to scare the gullible and children into doing good.

Where in the name...:
Vánagandr is definitely not a name the current era is accustomed to. The elves, however, seem to have a certain knowledge concerning them. Whether it is because of any racial connection is something never revealed despite both races sharing common features, for both people have always kept a distance from each other. Indeed the only thing separating the Vánagandr from the Homm'Nua lies in the colour of their hair, which is always as white as winter snow.

Scholars studying elven culture have occasionally pointed out that Vánagandr is possibly a name meant to remember a specific individual. In fact, the Teutonian fief of Ván where they now reside never went by that name originally. According to the History of Three Kingdoms written by the historian Tabarius Glayn, Edmonte II, the High Lord during that time, sealed a royal edict giving the fief of Gastony as "a gesture of goodwill and sincerity towards my friend Gandr de Morte. He who fought for my honour undeservedly stained and nearly lost". According to the text, present before ruler and nobles were elven sellswords led by a female known only as Lokarina the Knife.

Per her request, Gastony was renamed as Ván, which incidentally was one of the twenty-six runes used by "every being of non-human birth". As for this Gandr de Morte was, it is widely accepted that he was most likely the leader before Lokarina assumed the position. Concerning his fate, some said he might have left behind his followers to pursue a life of peace while others insisted that he most likely died a violent death since it was implied that he's a sellsword. Either way, anything written beyond the boundaries of history can never ever be verified.

Capabilities:
The few who have witnessed how these individuals fight attested to the seemingly insane: They possess the ability to teleport at will. At the same time, their technique is one of refined savagery where bestial aggression, fluid strokes, and lethal force are involved.

At the same time, it is whispered that they have the ability to mask themselves. Most likely via some sort of magic, they are said to have the innate ability to cast some sort of illusion over themselves where they can effectively assume the guise of any visage of any race.

As for the most absurd of claims, rumours have it that they are intended as a natural counterforce against demons, that this has always been the only reason for their existence. A statement which has earned many a sneering look from scholars and the knowledgeable.

Okay, I have to apologise for the fact that the above )0( isn't aligned correctly. The Blogger interface can be really dodgy at times and I don't know why. In the past, copy and paste would solve the trick. Now, not even this approach works. What you see is the evidence of what I said is true. Period. For some funny reason, prolonged usage has always resulted in this. Weird.

At the same time, I've decided not to upload anything relating to Hollywood for the time being (i.e. for an indefinite period). The reason why being that... well, I just feel I need to do something after stating certain facts concerning the whole #WhyWeWearBlack movement. Not here, but on Facebook. When I said anything relating to Hollywood, I mean stuff like movie clips and site links. In fact, this standard will be extended to any non-Hollywood showbiz as well for a reason. Knowing my tendency to perform reckless showmanship, however, I can only hope the likes of Rose McGowan won't roast me alive for being hypocritical where future posts are concerned (read: I'll need to constantly remind myself of what I've written today).

However, I won't change the names of certain characters for a reason. I could have changed names like Emma Watts Eliaden and Emhylea von Stormhearth. The only catch? I've effectively trapped myself like Harry Houdini Pot (don't bother Googling for this guy since he's most likely #fakenews). Kagetsu no Hyo'Ah is visually based on a Korean celebrity named BoA while Alestrial Eliaden is visually based on another Korean celebrity named Park Shin-hye. Guess I'll still be given the McGowan Roast nevertheless.
The fact that I can align this one properly is proof that Blogger interface is truly dodgy.
Also, pergi mampus is something Rose McGowan would say to Weinstein if she understands Malay.

A Crucible's Lore: Rangers and bounty hunting

It's been a surreal week. Why I say that is very simple: In one week, three prominent names passed away. The first to go was R.C Sproul. Then Kim Jong-hyun was next. Lastly, it was Bernard Law's turn.

Why I say this is very simple: I'm already starting to write a new chapter of A Requiem From Winter Past and said chapter actually involves a philosophical conversation surrounding homines (i.e. men in Latin speak) and deorum (i.e. gods in Latin speak). And since it involves the relationship between humanism and theism, it means the passing of three totally different individuals now carries a sense of surreality. I may need some time to further process what needs to be processed. At the same time, I think I need to rephrase the word "cardinal" into something else due to Bernard Law's impact on the world (I'm referring to this one).

Note: I'm not interested in starting a fight between Rome and the rest of the world. I'm more than happy to respect Roman Catholics from Singapore and beyond since I'm not stupid enough to assume every graduate from CHIJ goes by the name Elaine Jasmine Heng. In other words, I'm not about to assume every Roman Catholic goes by the name of... okay, never mind that.

Add note: I don't want to elaborate who is Elaine Jasmine Heng. I'll just let Google carry the black wok for me.

What this post is all about
Basically, I think I need to create a lore book. Well, sorta anyway. After all, I don't expect myself to explain every single part of the world while telling a story. In my previous (and now defunct) blogs That Random Blade and This Known World, I did something like that. For some reason, I couldn't retrieve my password. Hence, I needed to create a new Google account. And that includes starting everything from ground zero. Plenty of stuff and ideas... well, you get the drift. In my childhood and teenage years, no one was able to set me right since no one knew what's wrong with me. Not even myself. Near twenty years of being error prone means being unable to live like a normal person today. And it doesn't help that no one seems to know my struggles except for myself at the moment.

Since I'm no different from Vincent van Gogh while he was still alive, I might as well make the most out of what I know I can do. Opinions be damned, this is my life and not that of others. Margaret Weis once said this about Raistlin Majere:
"People can identify with Raistlin. We can relate to feelings that nobody loves us, to the struggle for recognition and acceptance. I really understood Raistlin right off the bat."

Unlike Amos Yee, I am just another Raistlin Majere. And I can live with that.

Lore focus: Rangers
Origin:
Unlike those sellswords we are so familiar with, rangers have a longer history. Much longer given the fact that mercenaries only started existing after the Age of Renown reached its end. A noble profession for those not so noble, being one was the only way which a halfborne could prove himself as somewhat valuable.

Unlike the current society, the smallborne was never something as simple as being a commoner. Rather, anyone not of elven or dwarven blood would be regarded as one. The Homm'Eot (that is, the dwarves) enslaved them, the Homm'Nua (that is, the elves) looked down on them despite freedom given at no price at all. A halfborne is one of smallborne lineage mingled with either dwarven or elven blood. The Homm'Eot would always work the smallborne men while bedding the finest of their wives and daughters. As for the Homm'Nua, there would always be willful daughters eloping with unworthy lovers or an errant son taking an unworthy maiden as a paramour. The challenge for both races was apparent: To take a life without any cause is murder, to do so the same against an infant is murder twice as worse. The punishment for the former is death by decapitation. The penalty for the latter would be that of a traitor where descendants must bear the sins of the transgressor unless pardoned by whoever ruling over them.

Back then, the Age of Renown was never without its own conflicts. The orcs were given their share of the world, yet something went wrong. We still do not know the reason why, for there is a saying amongst our people: A hatchet buried in history is a hatchet never seen. However, rumours have it that the Homm'Ogr desired what lies in the south beyond the mountains. The Homm'Nua vehemently objected to it while the Homm'Eot tried dissuading them. What happened afterwards, should such tales be true, is not known. After all, a hatchet buried in history is a hatchet never seen.

As a result, rangers were needed as auxiliary troops against the occasional orcish raid. By any standard of the Homm'Ogr, this means months of bloodshed, an occurrence best likened to a dormant volcano erupting violently. After the third such attack, Aellen de Stormhearth, Crown of the Homm'Nua, commissioned a census throughout the elven territory. Brayn Ironsiege, Crown of the Homm'Eot, followed suit, for he was ever an opportunistic king. The intent of both rulers was the same: To find out how many halfborne were there under their respective rule.

The numbers totalled up to twenty thousand strong, men and maidens strong enough to traverse across terrain while wielding bows, slings, and swords. This was not taking into account children and youths yet to enter the Rite of Coming, a test of understanding and ability before one could be recognised as an adult.

Alas even then, proper recognition was more of a child's dream than an attainable fantasy. Circumstances, however, tend to deal the most unexpected hand. As it turned out, the rangers now serve as a reminder of a golden age never to be surpassed.

Current scenario:
As fighters and scouts who utilised sniping and underhanded means to win a fight, rangers were soon recognised as the first sellswords to grace the pages of history. Perhaps via inspiration or due to dire straits, mercenaries soon took the field in droves. The downfall of an era promised much riches and many ways to die, therefore how can one ever resist the lure? Utterly disillusioned by dreams cruelly mocked, the rangers abandoned their duty. Like those who came after them, they indulged in fighting for coin and spending their keep. Be it on food, ale, or whores, an army of hounds soon became a pack of wolves. Answerable to no one and held accountable to none. They used to be tightly knitted, yet each chose in the end to go his individual way. Some chose to hold onto what was left, most pledged their causes to the highest bidder.

Like every profession, there must be new blood coming in. No longer fettered by the arrogance of their masters, each ranger would always make sure to nurture a child for this very life. It could be an abandoned infant still alive or a child lost in the woods. If one has enough coin, a purchase from an orphanage would be a surer bet. If one was daring enough, surely a noble's daughter or a merchant's son would go missing under the moon and stars. To every ranger, only children were able to learn fast. At the same time, they acknowledged the ability to ask questions tend to result in survival in the long run rather than outright death. A notion which an otherwise civilised world scoffed at its own pitiful loss. In the short run, however, any outcome could be a possibility.

Ability:
Rangers are masters of terrain warfare. Guided by instinct, adaptation would only be a matter of minutes, if not within an hour or so. Whenever needed, a skilled ranger can stay unmoving for days. Be it beneath the canopy, behind the thick trunk of a tree, or among bushes and shrubs, the finest assassin is always the most patient one.

When it comes to proficiency, a ranger is always required to master one type of projectile weapon and one type of melee weapon. The former can range from crossbow to throwing knives while the latter includes any weapon type apart from the heavy ones like halberds and two-handed swords.

In ranged combat, a ranger favours a single attack piercing the opponent's eye rather than letting loose a barrage or a crippling hit. At the same time, rangers always pick the best spot instead of just engaging the enemy upon sight. This results in long ranged attacks done from the high ground or short ranged attacks fired from any cover.

In melee fighting, the first attack will always define the ranger's next move and beyond. Against a single target, such tactic is called assassination. Against a group, such an approach becomes a case of assessing and strike. Either way, it is imperative for the first attack to result in the target either dead or maimed. Either way, a ranger relies on fast hitting attacks with the decisive blow struck once the target presents an opening.

When it comes to dodging attacks, rangers excelled best in any terrain offering enough space and cover. Yet, it must be stated that they tend to fight best under the cover of a forest with stumbling roots tripping the opponent instead of the combatant. After all, limited space means a better chance of parrying attacks. At the same time, running away is not so much about having enough space, but rather fast thinking and knowing where to run. In any party of adventurers, a ranger can easily slip out of enemy view to deliver a fatal stroke. For they are known as masters of assassination both on the battlefield and alone within the shadows.

Lore focus: Bounty hunting
Origin:
Where there are sellswords, there are surely criminals on the run. No one knows exactly when bounty hunting as a way to earn money first started. Some said it began when mercenaries started plying their trade and the various rulers knowing the need not to make enemies out of them. At least not if they could help it. Then there are those who claimed that it was originally intended as a form of mockery directed towards the nobility who always enjoy hunting as a sport. Some believed this practice was started during the Age of Harmony when the Causaceans were a unified people. Either that or it began after the War of the Three Thrones in order to deal with unlawful elements beyond any authority's control.

No matter which one is the correct answer, any mercenary would just give a shrug should this question be asked. That plus a sardonic remark or two directed towards the so-called intellectuals, people who actually spend their free time debating over such a pointless topic in a comfortable room.

How the market works:
While bounty hunting is absolutely legal and a convenient way to get rid of problematic individuals, any authority knows the need to supervise a trade involving volatile elements. For a start, mercenaries aren't exactly the most civilised people in the world. Secondly, competition may eventually give way to a chaotic free for all over a particular bounty, a notion scoffed by sellswords who know their code of conduct better than kings or civilians. Indeed there has always been a golden rule where bounty hunting is concerned: He who claims the kill claims the credit, but he who engages the prey must never be impeded. Anyone who breaks this rule runs the risk of dishonour, a situation resulting in either isolation or hostility from those who know both the deed and doer.

In every town or city, an office in charge of managing the transactions is set up. Not only is this the only legal place where payment is given, this is also the only place allowed by the authorities to disclose which targets are available. An issue which bounty hunters have no problem with since it's all about the money. Targets are classified into three categories:

Category I targets are fugitives guilty of petty crimes. Acts like theft and robbery committed against the rich and powerful. The reward is always paid through pence (that is, the lowest level of Causacean currency).

Category II targets are those guilty of more serious crimes like rape, arson, and murder. The reward available involves either a mix of quarters (that is, the second level of Causacean currency) and pence or a payment of purely quarters.

Category III targets are like those under Category II, only more dangerous for all the obvious reasons. Such targets are the only way for bounty hunters to earn crowns (the highest level of Causacean currency) with rare cases commanding a fee of crowns and gems combined.

To obtain rightful payment, proof of the deed done must be given. This means a severed head belonging to the target. As a result, bounty hunting is something welcomed by undertakers. To every sellsword, payment is always a matter of racing against time, for to live by the sword means learning to expect the unexpected. At the same time, no one can ever discern the identity of a rotting corpse, let alone a rotting head. Even though an exorbitant fee is synonymous with the service of embalming within this context, a sellsword knows how valuable this seemingly unworthy task is. At the same time, not every mercenary is willing to own a horse. Therefore, stable owners also stand to profit from any deal brokered albeit not as much compared to the undertakers.

Okay, I know this post isn't worth that much compared to what I'm normally used to doing. However, there's no point pushing myself to the point where I know my standard may be compromised. Once my brain hit a blank, I know it's time to give up the ghost. Lastly, I'll just up this vid.

Just wanna write something (in case my sword has gone rusty)

Now before someone starts snickering, my sword refers to my brain. It is like what Tyrion Lannister famously said to his (?) fellow (?) bastard (?).

To be honest, this post is most likely to be more than a wee chaotic. I'll be writing a bit of everything. The nearest label to this post, therefore, would be The Crucible. After all, this label denotes either posts discussing the fictional world of A Requiem From Winter Past or affairs of the real world. Ironically, however, I find that the line separating fiction from reality is capable of blurring itself at times. The name of that line? Human nature.

Neverwinter Six has been (totally) recalled

Nothing lasts forever, eternity doesn't exist in a world where temporary things rule the roost. Be it from Braniffer to Brangelina or the latest Korean splitsville, all things are destined to face an end. That includes my original plan of the Neverwinter Six. Due to the fact that I was born somewhat obsessive, I decided to attempt an ambitious plan. And that was to create a plot flowing according to the actual Neverwinter game itself. The only problem? What goes into theory doesn't necessarily translate into reality. Don't believe me, go ask China whether communism is the correct way to run a nation.

Therefore, I decided to do a Total Recall. This is not to say the entire plan is dead. Rather, I'm now attempting a new plot. Instead of Neverwinter, it will involve Cormyr. Instead of six characters, it will be half the number. As for who will get to feature... well, let me do the intro (minus the images because I'm too lazy to 田+PrtSc).

Arylos

[His eyes were like a hawk, his visage that of a wolf. Fair was his rugged look to one of a lesser race, but Cyrea knew better. That he was nothing to look at from the eyes of the Tel-quessir, that he was merely boasting average features before them. He was worth nothing compared to Ilyath. Her beloved was a fighter blessed with honor. Arylos, in turn, was a schemer bereft of scruples. Yet, there was something in his words uttered in defiance and pride. A statement of intent directed towards a god whom he never knew, a statement of blasphemy aimed at his own people. Something which Ilyath could never replicate, no matter how exceptional he truly was compared to this scoundrel she mockingly called a hero.

"Never my god and never my people."]

Nicknames:
Hero (to Myrreas as a compliment; to Cyrea as a word of contempt due to his pragmatism and cynicism challenging her beliefs), Aryl (only to Korey), Ratwit (to the locals at Wheloon post-isolation), Lone Wolf (to the Eldreth Veluuthra as a form of mockery), Sword of Kelemvor (first coined by Lorelei Gravesower, later recognised as an official title by most, if not all, Kelemvorites after the defeat of Isies Dragonsbane, a Chosen of Cyric), Heir (to Celadaine, Black Knight of Malabog; formerly known as the Moonless Knight and Everwatcher of Iliyanbruen), Knight of Feywild (to the Iliyanbruen fey due to his blood ties with Celadaine who was hailed as the finest knight of Feywild prior to his fall from grace ), Kingslayer (official title conferred by Merrisara Winterwhite due to his feat of slaying Malabog), Cousin in-law (to Respen Durothil and Nymmestra Durothil due to... well, we know opposites do attract like the north-south magnetic science), Stormthief (to Drizzt Do'Urden and Elaith Craulnober as both a compliment and statement of respect), Forever-Cursed (to Beshaba after he spurned her advances), Ever-Cold (to Sune after he spurned her advances)

Class:
Ranger (main), Rogue (secondary)

Paragon class:
Stormwarden

Prestige class:
Consecrated Harrier

Patron deity:
Kelemvor

Arylos is a military genius, a brilliant tactician. He is someone abandoned by an unforgiving world. If there is any parallel I can use for him, it would be Buck from Jack London's The Call of the Wild. He has never done anything against the world, yet he has to suffer trials and tribulations. To rub salt into the injury, even his own people despise him. And all because he is never able to fit into their way of living. The so-called elven way of living. As a result, he lives apart from the world which despised him. He is quintessentially the kind of guy who became that monster the world has always been. Yet, he somehow ended up as a hero. Like his blueprint known as Archer, his status as a hero was nothing short of an irony. He never wanted to be a hero, yet he became one due to circumstances beyond his call. This is a character who can only live by the sword. In this sense, it can be said that Arylos is also someone living for the sword. This is the reason why he's not exactly the smartest person in Faerûn. His outstanding genius is only relevant in days of warfare, not in times of peace.

Cyrea Durothil

[From the first day, Myrreas found her alluring. There was indeed something otherworldly about her. It wasn't her hair of shoulder length gold or those eyes of sunset red. It has got nothing to do with her beautiful features or a shapely figure. This was a maiden who has seen plenty. Yet, a reality utterly blemished failed to defile her inner world. For she knew the monsters greeting her. She spoke very little about her past, yet one name was whispered in her sleep. Even though only for once, he still recalled the tears as the name Ilyath greeted his ears. Curiosity gripped him, his dogged determination managed to won the war. Ilyath Le'Quella, a moon elf of outstanding capability and upright character. Ilyath Le'Quella, he who was a hundred times better than the rest. Or so by his own guess.

Then an interesting thought crept into him. What if there was someone capable of achieving victory? What if the living was capable of supplanting the dead?]

Nicknames:
Princess (to Myrreas as a compliment; to Arylos, but as a form of sarcasm due to her idealism and upbringing as part of the sun elven nobility), Beloved Bride (to Ilyath Le'Quella due to their relationship as lovers prior to his untimely death due to Kymil Nimesin manipulating House Durothil for purposes unstated), Most Beautiful Cousin (to her two cousins, Respen Durothil and Nymmestra Durothil, much to her constant annoyance despite the compliment being spot on), Cyrri (to her two best friends, Sheallyn Melarn and Lewynn Hawkseal-Deudermont), Hope (to Celadaine just before his death via Malabog's treachery), Favored of Corellon (to her fellow sun elves prior to her decision to leave Evermeet), Legacy of Mystra (to Elminster and, later on, Sheallyn) Mirror (to Mystra)

Class:
Cleric (main), Wizard (secondary)

Paragon class:
Divine Oracle

Prestige class:
Favored Soul

Patron deity:
Corellon Larethian

If Arylos' mind is intended for warfare, then Cyrea's mind is a symbol of peace. In a world where conflict and peace are intertwined, Arylos can only fit into one half of the deal. Cyrea, on the other hand, fits into both halves. Definitely, Cyrea is one hell of a smart girl. She's basically every Singaporean's ideal girlfriend. Namely, rich, beautiful, and intelligent. Maybe that's what they mean when it comes to a Tesla girl.

Myrreas

[He was both the fool and devil. He was a fool because he allowed himself to be. He was a devil because of a ruthless streak in any fight, be it in a tavern brawl or against the dragon they slew years ago. It has been years since Myrreas left the Harpers in the name of acrimony. He never turned back even once since that fateful day. Sheallyn could only offer her blessings. No one has ever understood him. Either they were unable to or they never tried even once. He was someone doomed to loneliness. He once joked that he would stay lucky and forever alone. Either that or those in his life would die as a result. There would always be moments where she felt he wasn't pulling a jest, that he was more of a trophy Tymora and Beshaba have always fought over.]

Nicknames:
Myrr (to his companions except for Arylos), Troubleson (to the Harpers and those biased against him), Starknife (to Selûne after he successfully pulled the dagger from a tree stump surrounded by briars), Lucky Loner (to Tymora due to her understanding of his future), Never-Heir (to both Dagult Neverember and Arlon Bladeshaper for unknown reasons)

Class:
Rogue (main), Fighter (secondary)

Paragon class:
Master Infiltrator

Prestige class:
Arcane Trickster

Patron deity:
Selûne

If Arylos is neutral good and Cyrea lawful good, then Myrreas is chaotic good. This guy is trouble. Period. Traditionally, charismatic people tend to divide opinions and polarize views. From the late Lee Kuan Yew to Sir A. Fergie and J-Mou, the key lies in a strong personality with an innate charm. Myrreas can never be the late Mr Lee because he's not under the lawful alignment. He's neither Fergie or J-Mou since he's not exactly leader material. Yet, his charisma is definitely that: Love him or hate him, you gotta respect him.

The East, Punggol West, and... Aeravor?
He says, she says, but what does the data say about the East? My first reaction is a mixture of good and bad. Afterwards, the word chaotic popped up. Finally, chaotic evolved in chaotic neutral. Chaotic neutral is what you get when you're dealing with someone like Aeravor.

And speaking of Aeravor, I actually did some minor changes to A Requiem From Winter Past. When any locker room banter starts talking about having sex, all sorts of words start to come out. From the letter F to the letter S, from the letter C to the letter D. The phrase "having sex" sounds too banal. Yet, I don't want people to accuse me of being tasteless. Humor is a beautiful thing. They say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but there's no doubting that general consensus counts as well.

The beauty of humor lies in the words used. More oft than not, humor is displayed via visual images. Believe it or not, Jack Neo isn't the only one to play the most basic card. You got movies done by Wong Jing, you also have stuff like South Park and Beavis and Butthead. Or something quite tame in comparison.

Yet, humor via words is the best proof of class. Not every person can pull it off. Although granted things can get... well, more than a wee bit vulgar at times.

My style is... shall we say, quite tame by comparison. Long story short, two aspects of the male society were affected. When it comes to the tavern room banter version of having sex, I use the p-word instead of the f-word or s-word. If poke is not self-explanatory, I don't know what else is (believe it or not, even the lecturer was not above in using the phrase "kenna poke in the backside" during my part-time ITE days. Thankfully, I forgot the name of that lecturer).

As for breasts, I find the word boobs to be... well too tame. Tame enough for something rated PG. But A Requiem From Winter Past should be rated NC16 despite it being a dialogue focused work. Then I suddenly remembered an English slang. Stack is a non-dirty word. Once you mod it into stacked, that's where the all hell broke loose. Stacked in slang speak means... well, having large breasts. And since I'm dealing with a word cursed with sexual context, I might as well mod it. Simply put, stack in A Requiem From Winter Past means breasts. Not necessarily the type you enjoy seeing in porn.

Note: Seriously, I'm not a guru in doing explicit scenes. Majority of what you see in the above links is dialogue. Yes, there's such a thing called scenario. But I don't spend half a chapter telling the readers the SOP of any MMA fight. But nevertheless...
NC16 should be somewhere between T and M. Maybe ESRB should upgrade itself soon like a Singaporean.
Then again, which parent would heed the ESRB rating? Some, yes. Most, doubt so. All, hell no.
Contradicting myself like Archer
No matter whether it's Archer, Emiya Shirou, or Emiya Kiritsugu, the existence of contradiction would always dog them for eternity (that is unless you discount the legitimacy of Heaven's Feel since Nasuverse itself is a multiverse like the Marvelverse). For me, I've committed an Emiya.

So now comes my verdict. Metallurgy is now back to legit magic status. Yes, you read it right! Legit. You know what is legit? You go register your marriage with your dream spouse. Once the signature part is done, your marriage is legit. Once the vows are exchanged, your marriage is legit. Once both parties say "I do", your marriage is legit. And trust me, a kiss is not needed to make your marriage legit (although there have been instances of me attending wedding ceremonies sealed with a kiss. Hope you're fine and well over there in Japan with your SIA wife, Salted Fish).

This also means one thing: I have more things to write concerning random stuff in my world of A Requiem From Winter Past.

And to round off this chaotic neutral post...
I decided to do a bit about Aeravor. Note that the info I do here shouldn't be just limited to the written version. Gaming version is also included.

1. Aeravor's Scil is Geimhreadh.

2. Those of Scil Geimhreadh excel in physical and mental hardiness. While Geimhreadh doesn't boast the agility of Earrach, the physical style of Samhradh, or the mental strength of Fómhar, it is a fairly well-balanced Scil.

3. There's too much similarity between gambler's derring-do (Xiv) and risky gambit (Rag) since they indicate the same concept. Therefore, risky gambit is now changed to gambit's trade. After all, if Rag means Twilight, then pulling off a successful gambit will heighten your chances of surviving till the next dawn.Twilight may indicate the end, but dawn will always follow. It's like how Ragnarök will pan out once the Twilight of the Gods meets its end.

4. In the same way there are five runes in every deum, Aeravor will have five stats. In fact, all characters doing the fighting, man and woman, will have five stats.

5. The five stats are: Power (affects damage [2% per point] and all effect duration [1.5% per point]) , Fortitude (affects maximum hit points [5% per point] and damage resistance [2% per point; additional 3% per point when holding ground]), Dexterity (affects critical chance [0.5% per point] and damage reduction upon unsuccessful dodge [2% per point]), Wit (affects critical chance [+1% per point] and critical damage [0.5% per point]), and Resolve (affects damage resistance [1% per point; additional 1% per point when holding ground] and control effect resistance [1.5% per point; additional 2.5% per point when holding ground]).

6. As a Scil user of Geimhreadh, Aeravor gains +1 bonus to Resolve.

7. As Aeravor's bridge rune, Uf confers 30% damage bonus whenever his hit points reach 50% or below.

Okay, show is done.

Khaw Boon Wan, Donald Trump, and Ahnuld: Total Recall it like a schizo (Currently updated @11/11/17)

Edit: This post is too short by my own standard. And besides, half of it was irrelevant. So might as well add more stuff. And I mean the truly relevant ones. For those who have been through it, just scroll down to Mr Chou and GAR-cher. Otherwise, it's up to you whether you want to torture yourself.
Ireland? What manner of (druidic) sorcery is this?
Do I look like an Ulsterman born in the year of the dog to them?

Firstly, let me just say that no offence is intended on the post title. Schizophrenia is no joke, denial will only get the victim into deeper trouble. Already, global society isn't exactly known for dealing with mental illness.

In other news, it's been more than a year since Donald Trump became President Trump. The American Civil War is still raging (actually, it has never ceased since the days of Union versus Confederates), I have yet to see anything proving my cynicism is wrong. Don't get me wrong, I have got no problems with Americans. Rather, I blame it on American problems rather than Americans.

And speaking of Trump, I don't know whether I'm the only one smart enough to realise flip-flopping has always been his favourite hobby. Okay, that might have been a hyperbole, something which Trump has been known to do. But still, the numbers are too glaring. 253 billion worth of business deals despite crying foul like more than a year ago. And that's not considering alternating between diplomacy and fire+brimstone when it comes to North Korea. It's like wondering whether he playing it on purpose or truly a case of... well, being a schizo instead of sounding like a schizo.

Speaking of (sounding) schizo, I came across something earlier like last week or so.

Yes, it's true. I think I'm really total-recalling it like a schizo. No offence intended towards anybody excluding myself.

With the offensive part done, I need to Total Recall my runes

http://glaive-d-barde.blogspot.com/2017/10/they-killed-lancer.html
http://glaive-d-barde.blogspot.com/2017/11/armed-and-dangerous-but-no-longer-young.html

The system felt weird to me. It's like seeing Emilia Clarke changing the colour of her hair. Don't get me wrong, I like her Dany look. The problem is, the Dany look is definitely better in the televised world of Westeros. In the same way Westeros looks (and feels) different from the U.K, I actually prefer Emilia (Clarke) the natural brunette when it comes to beyond Westeros (and Essos as well for that matter).

Why I'm mentioning Emilia Clarke is very simple. I know the reason why her new Dany look felt strange to me, but I don't know why the incumbent rune system created by yours truly felt the same. In fact, it didn't feel 100% right when I started doing it. Since I couldn't pinpoint the source of unease, I decided to go ahead with it.

Then I realised the reason. More specifically, it's a case of possible answers found than something absolute. It felt too draggy. It's like flogging a dead horse. Not everyone can pull off a Peter Jackson like a king. People tried to do it like a boss, said boss ended up burning him/herself like Denethor II. If you think it's just one local Singaporean getting burnt, you're wrong. Terribly wrong. So terribly and horribly wrong like this poor old man below.

Enough about bashing others, let's start bashing myself. So where did I stop? Oh, the draggy part. It's too much of a drag when I think back about it. I enjoyed the process of creating, just that I suddenly remembered that gnawing feeling. It's like being a finely crafted door with termites having a feast inside.

Let's streamline this
Stretching your brain too much is not good for any person of creativity. It's like running a nation. Surely you wouldn't like that feeling when you have to sell your country's debt to another country. Still, it's a necessity (I mean the creativity part even though I have to admit running a country means killing yourself in a certain sense). Therefore, I decided to streamline the runic system. The words and deum system stay unchanged, just that the usage has to be tweaked.

Thaumaturgy
No more 24 different effects or whatever. One effect per deum and not one effect per rune. However, the Nihilo deum effect stays the same. After all, there's only Zyf and Aark.

Earrach:
Upon using any rune within this deum (Bors, Cers, Darg, Fleig, and Gis), the caster gains an increase in physical dexterity. At the same time, even the most grievous wounds can be healed in a matter of moments.

Samhradh:
Upon using any rune within this deum (Hel, Jorm, Kaer, Les, and Mar), the caster gains a spike in adrenaline. During this state, the caster has a heightened threshold of pain together with an increase in physical force and pace.

Fomhar:
Upon using any rune within this deum (Nid, Pros, Qui, Rag, and Ste), the caster gains a focused mind of steel. During this state, attacks hit more accurately with a lack of fear towards death contributing to whatever defensive technique the caster is capable of.

Geimhreadh:
Upon using any rune within this deum (Tev, Van, Wod, Xiv, and Yet), the caster gains the ability to inflict severe injuries via any means (i.e. physical, magic, or both). Such attacks are capable of cutting through armour via sheer force.

Notes:
1. Bridge runes are still needed to create the effect (Es, Ia, Or, and Uf respectively).

2. Those capable of using magic will always be binded to one of the four deums. Basically, this also means Aeravor is (possibly) a monster like the real Vánagandr.

3. The effect of each deum is now more in sync with what the respective seasons represent. Spring represents vibrancy, something synonymous with healing and physical nimbleness. Summer represents passion, something associated with heightened strength and constitution. Autumn represents melancholy and the waning of physical strength, things linked with the necessity of mental strength. Winter represents the end of all things, something pointing towards the stranglehold mortality has over life itself.

4. I suddenly realised one thing: I was born in the month of Samhain where November is actually the first month of the Gaelic/Celtic calendar. Coincidentally, winter reflects the years of my life and how I view the world in general. Maybe I'll end up getting a girlfriend born in the month of April. After all, Aibreán is the last month of spring leading up to summer.

Runic weapons
Actually, all magic weapons are runic weapons and vice versa. Let's see things this way: Man and woman=human beings; Human beings=man and woman. Failure to understand this logic means the inability to respect women. Likewise, failure to recognise the logic behind runic weapons and magic weapons means there's nothing more I can say to you when it comes to common sense logic.

To put it in a nutshell, the carving of runes is the only reason why magic weapons are possible. Same old story: One deum rune and one bridge rune belonging to the chosen deum are needed for the SOP. This time around, runic weapons are streamlined into three categories.

1. Weapons of ice: The crafters have strongly negative views of the world which ranges from cynicism to outright animosity. Such crafters are known as the Gefrieren.

2. Weapons of fire: The crafters are either those harbouring a great love for the world or those cursed with destructive tendencies (and yes, I know what I've written sounds bipolar, but trust me when I say it is not). Such crafters are known as the Incendie.

3. Weapons of lightning: The crafters are basically seen as either whimsical, nigh crazy, or even truly crazy. In other words, they're as unpredictable as Susanoo. Such crafters are known as the Delbhna.

Notes:
1. If the crafter has the character traits of more than one type, that crafter, in turn, is able to create the runic weapons under the relevant categories. For example, a crafter with the character traits of a Gefrieren and Incendie can craft weapons of either type.

2. However, above statement is a case of rare occurrences. This is due to the need for the crafter to have strong character traits associated with the crafting type instead of merely the presence. Simply put, it's a case of nature plus extent rather than nature alone.

3. Crafters are mortals after all. Which means in an entire lifetime, a crafter is most likely able to craft only two weapons. Three at most.

4. The Grail is a special category of runic weapons. While they are powerful in their own right, a strong resonation with the wielder's character would read like "supercharged magic weapon". It's like comparing normal missiles with nuclear missiles. Both are powerful, but one is way more powerful than the other.

5. Here's a scary fact: Any Grail contains part of the crafter's identity. Apparently, something went horribly correct somewhere. You may find it interesting, but I don't enjoy the notion of wielding a weapon that thinks like a Juuchi Yosamu.

6. Here an interesting trivia: The pommel of Fragarach (i.e. Aeravor's version) has the shape of a ring. I've seen a number of swords (not the ones used for killing, mind you). And guess what? The ring pommel is something real. And I'm not referring to "made in Korea".

7. Gefrieren is the German word for freeze/ice.

8. Incendie is the French word for fire/burning/conflagration/blaze. Apparently, the verbally correct version is le incendie.

9. Delbhna is actually a Gaelic Irish tribe claiming kinship with the Dál gCais, through descent from Dealbhna son of Cas. I'm not sure of the potential indication, but it seems that this is the Irish version of "limpeh".

I need to sleep now
I got work tomorrow. Unlike Jack Neo, my life sucks in the sense that I'm not entitled to do the things I like for a living. In fact, I need to wake up at 7 am tomorrow due to SGH doing its very own mobilisation. Hence, I might as well end this post with... like a couple of videos?

I know this MV may seem depressing to you, hence I decided to up one more vid to make you all feel better.

Currently 11/11/2017, let's continue
I'll need to do some minor (?) spoilers here. In the previous drafts, there were two characters. One is named Ziron, the other called Erik. In the current draft, however, I created a problem. Namely, whether the bro duo is still relevant to the plot. There are characters which I don't mind being extras or worse. Ziron and Erik are NOT two of them. In the event which there's a second shot, it's possible that they'll be back like Arnie. Most likely, however, it's going to be quite the opposite.

So does it feel like a bummer? After all, Erik may (or may not) be a character inspired by someone I happen to know/admire. In fact, the original plan was for him to be Aeravor's second teacher after Ziron couldn't do a thing about reforming (?) that bastard protagonist of mine. The problem lies in Fragarach. That thing is intended as a plot device linked to the bro duo. The presence of Emhylea threw the original Sanders into a state of chaos. Period. This was because Ziron and Erik were intended to perform the role Emhylea is doing right now.

Interestingly, it didn't feel like a bummer. I'm not someone who has the tendency to develop an emotional attachment. Even for those currently in my life, I am no different from someone staying true to the Samhain winter since everyone in the world is staying in spring or summer. At worst, it's autumn for them, unlike this guy who has to face three months' worth of harsh winter. So yeah, it's not that bad beyond my occasional bouts of emotional instability (read: blizzard happens, you know).

Technique and deums
Same as what I've done so far in the sense that I'm gonna streamline this. I'll have to give credit to the most unexpected source of motivation. Not my future girlfriend, but Cryptic. When Elemental Evil was declared a failure where Neverwinter Online is concerned, one thing stood out for me. And that is the decision to streamline things. Granted the teething process was troublesome and outright problematic at worst, but it doesn't take a Jewish rocket scientist to know the positive side to streamlining. In fact, I'm not even a Jew beyond the fact that I was treated like one from age 11 (at Henderson Primary School) to age 13 and beyond (at Gan Eng Seng Secondary School). And I was still seen as a Jew from ITE Dover all the way till 32 SIB.

Okay, I know I'm griping here. Let's continue before I start commenting on why I prefer Thorin Oakenshield unlike my fellow S'poreans (who are most likely pro-elven sans the foreign Lee).

Wonder if my super mignonne legal housebreaker knew about the other side of foreign Lee...

Earrach:
The technique of Earrach is focused on agility and fast hitting moves.  While power is definitely lacking, the user of Scil Earrach is more than capable of recovering from missed attacks in the blink of an eye. The five runes represent the guiding arm (Bors), moving feet (Cers), perceiving mind (Darg), flicking wrist (Fleig), and ever-changing tempo (Gis).

Samhradh:
The technique of Samhradh is focused on force and aggression. Mobility is only secondary, a ruthless streak and sheer momentum will win the day for those of Scil Samhradh. The five runes represent the mighty swing (Hel), bleeding pierce (Jorm), holding ground (Kaer), gathering pace (Les), and inner wrath (Mar).

Fomhar:
The technique of Fomhar is focused on defending and counter-offensive. To the user of Scil Fomhar, power is the sword while the mind is the shield. The five runes represent the thieving bite (Nid), parrying wall (Pros), sudden burst (Qui), gambit's trade (Rag), and two-hit hand (Ste).

Geimhreadh:
The technique of Geimhreadh is focused on mental steel and a heart bereft of fear. To the user of Scil Geimhreadh, survival and fatalism are brothers while death is the greatest dual-edged sword. The five runes represent the frigid gaze (Tev), single stroke (Van), fearless stand (Wod), gambler's derring-do (Xiv), and living steel (Yet).

Nihilo:
The technique of Nihilo is a mystery to all. Some say it doesn't exist, other say users of such Scil are real. Either way...

Notes:
1. Bridge runes are redundant for a reason. A bridge rune represents the personality of the user, something justifying the user's right to use his/her chosen Scil. Es indicates either a hopeful outlook despite the odds or a hedonistic nature. Ia indicates either an aggressive nature or passionate character. Or indicates melancholy while Uf indicates fatalism.

3. I'd like to include cynicism as well, but it turned out that I'm creating a cynical world which no sane Singaporean would want to touch. Not even with a ten-foot pole by my own guess. Which means cynicism is not needed in this context.

4. There will be times where a potential user is actually eligible for more one Scil. Unlike the previous version, I decided to retcon the whole thing. Simply put, only one Scil allowed per user.

5. In the event where the user is eligible for more than one Scil, the decisive factor is chaos. Chaos may not be fun to tame, but it sure is fun to use. Just ask Wanda whether her Chaos magic is capable of charming Nightcrawler, accidentally or otherwise. After all, Thor did say "Beauty and power are yours to command, fair Wanda".

How the runes would look like
Firstly and foremost, I'm too lazy to immolate my brain cells. Secondly, I'm either a tech idiot or a tech Amish. This is unlike 99.9999999.........% of the global population. Unless I get a girlfriend, I doubt things are going to change, be it for the better or worse. Therefore, I'm going to mess around with the actual ABC for my runes. Note that I'll be listing them in alphabetical order since the written order is different from the order of classification.

Aark: Imagine it as the capital A realigned upside down.

Bors: Looks like the capital B, but with triangular modification done to the two round areas (any image of your dream radiographer girl baring her cleavage during work should be seen as a case of unintended consequences. After all, I don't want to get myself slaughtered by my future girlfriend's BFFs plus my future mom-in-law).

Cers: A pentagon minus the line below.

Darg: It's just a triangle turned to the right. Nothing else to see here, move on.

Es: Seen Justice League? Know Aquaman? Seen his trident? It's a case of three points facing down. Also, I haven't seen Gal Gadot donning her breastplate yet. No innuendos intended because Wonder Woman does wear her breastplate correctly. Unfortunately, Batman and Superman are too dumb to wear their underwear inside.

Fleig: Looks like the capital letter F, but with the top two lines slanting downwards.

Gis: You have something like [ plus something that looks like > at the bottom right.

Hel: The capital letter H. Yes, I'm really that unoriginal.

Ia: Just a straight line going from top to bottom instead of left to right.

Jorm: Write the capital letter L on a piece of paper. Then make the L face a mirror. No, I'm not joking here.

Kaer: Capital letter K bending over. If it doesn't look like a tripod, it means you're too dumb to understand basic instructions.

Les: Refer to Hel.

Mar: Capital letter M turned to the left. I think I've seen that before, though. Like during some maths lesson. Dunno.

Nid: Similar to Hel and Les, but slightly tipped to the right. It should look like a lightning bolt (hopefully, the PAP government won't sue me for copyright infringement. I'm too poor to fight the AGC in court, but I'm also too prideful to apologise for something so trivial).

Or: A long rectangle. Yes, you're reading this right. A long rectangle.

Pros: Basically, it looks like a triangular flag complete with a flagpole.

Quis: Looks like the Or rune, but with a small line drawn horizontally across the bottom right.

Rag: Looks like the capital letter R, but with the top round part being triangular instead.

Ste: Ever tried using the calculator? Ever imagined what 5 would look like on the calculator screen?

Tev: An arrow pointing upwards. The top part should only be slightly slanted at either side.

Uf: Long rectangle minus the line at the bottom.

Van: Basically the capital letter V placed upside down. Like Aark, no less.

Wod: Two mountain peaks. I'm not referring to a woman's breasts, but the capital letter M. I don't need my future girlfriend's BFFs conspiring with my future mom-in-law to slaughter me, tyvm.

Xiv: Literally the capital letter X.

Yet: Capital letter Y placed upside down à la La Tour Eiffel.

Zyf: Looks like capital letter Z, but with the slanting line set straight instead.

P.S: Okay, the SGH mobilisation has bitten a massive chunk off my focus. My brain is now entering hibernation mode, I've yet to eat dinner. Apparently, not even Starbucks is powerful enough. The peppermint ice mocha was nice, though.

Add P.S: Ever wonder what happens when a boy of Samhain meets a girl of Aibreán during the month of November?
