冬の鎮魂曲 [完全リコール!!!!]

This is getting crazy and out of hand. My neither-here-nor-there attitude where designing the video game version of A Requiem From Winter Past is looking more like Donald Trump's crisis management skill than anything else. It's like Theresa May getting stuck between an angry EU and the angry Tories. It really resembles Abe Shinzo trapped between domestic woes and a civil war.

Then again, I'm pretty sure it didn't hit the epic level of my nation's submarine subway. Ah well, at least the Germans now got a new BFF. And hopefully, it's not me.

I'd like to embed the Arnie cup noodles ad video as well, but it seems the embedding option is disabled. Hence, I decided to do a compensation. Well, of sorts...

完全リコール=Total Recall=Kanzen Recall
I've never played the Witcher series. Not the censored version, definitely not the uncensored version. Let alone the latest deal with the most achievements. While I won't call myself the Christopher Columbus of Singapore (since I don't identify my ways with his ways), I have to admit I've got that Marco Polo DNA which no sane local S'porean has.

So what it means is that I actually have the weird tendency of browsing random wikis like a cat. 90% of the stuff I know so far hailed from such sources so that no one can call me a fraud per se.

More specifically, in this case, the Witcher wiki. That's basically the reason why I put 完全リコール/Total Recall/Kanzen Recall as part of the post title. The meaning should be very clear, I made sure of that just now. Therefore, any attempt to stalk your dream Japanese megami tensei will result in me saying "not my problem" like Ken Jeong. Seriously, don't be so stupid to ask your dream Japanese megami tensei what is 完全リコール. Because I say so and I've already said what needs to be said. You wouldn't want to make the Okinawans salty like how the Koreans have become... well, salty.

So what will be changed?
Basically, I'll just revert the story format back to the original Sanders. Namely, following the events written in the book. However, the controls will be... well, hopefully quite different. Since this is a 完全リコール, I don't think there's a need for me to up the relevant "Previously on *insert title here*" links.

Controls used
I know above meme is a very cruel way to laugh at a certain Mr Bill. After all, the tables were effectively turned when we talk about the starting sales (read: apparently, the business dudes at Sony failed their maths last time around when they did the PS3 pricing). However, I'll have to be fair in saying I'm more used to the PS controller interface more than anything else. That's even though I was guilty of buying a modded PS2 instead of the original Sanders. Please note that this was a choice gone horribly wrong on the moral scale. Seriously, don't buy a modded console. Even though I don't have the moral high ground to say that per se due to my past record as a closet troublemaker.

Wait... I think Mr Bill and his friends have come up with a way to do a mod-block. Last time I checked, there are no modded PS3 consoles in the market. Hopefully, I'm not wrong.

A story of how stuff works
In this section, I'll explain how stuff works in terms of buttons and controls. Hopefully, the interface would sound too streamlined to be real.

How this thing works: Attack
While the action is self-explanatory, attacks here refers specifically to weapon attacks. There are two variations to attacking.

The first would be fast attack where less damage is dealt per hit. However, fast attacks can be chained. Depending on the weapon used, the chain combo can last anywhere from 3 to 7 hits. Fast attacks have a base chance of 2% to critical hit and cannot be cancelled. Fast attack is done by tapping the button.

The second variation is heavy attack where high damage is dealt. This attack will also cause armour rend status where the opponent will take more damage for the rest of the fight. However, this attack cannot be chained and it is slow to come out. If your heavy attack misses the mark, you'll open yourself up for any counter-attack where the first hit will deal extra damage. Heavy attacks have a base critical damage of 10%. At the same time, heavy attacks can be cancelled either before or in the middle of the animation. The former will increase Focus gauge while the latter deals only one-third damage instead. This is particularly important because cancelling allows you to pull off your next move asap. Heavy attack is done by holding down the button.

How this thing works: Defend
Defend is separated into two types. Namely, dodging and holding ground.

Dodging involves either rolling forward or backwards. This is done by pressing the button and directing the movement via the left analogue stick at the same time. Until the animation kicks in, however, you'll be opened for any attacks. The next attack dealt within the next 3 seconds after dodging will deal double damage upon hit.

Holding ground involves taking damage in exchange for filling up both the Focus gauge and Force gauge (more on that later) throughout the effect duration. This is done by holding down the button. When holding ground, you cannot perform any other action. However, there will be a 30% chance of any attack being automatically parried (see below).

How this thing works: Parry
Unlike the first two buttons, parry cannot be done via holding down the button. Rather, it can only be executed by pressing the button before an attack hit you. A successful parry will cause your next attack within the next 3 seconds to automatically hit.

How this thing works: Tactic
Tactic is a power unique to the respective characters. Conferring various effects depending on the character used, this is what truly separates one character from another.

How this thing works: D-pad
In this game, you'll have 4 inventory slots. These slots are meant for items prepared to be used either outside of combat or during one. If any slot is greyed out, it means the item in that slot cannot be used. Items able to be slotted in the D-pad interface are potions and projectiles. Potions can only be used outside of combat while projectiles can only be used during combat.

To reconfigure the items filling the inventory slots, press any D-pad directional button and triangle/square/circle/cross.

How this thing works: Focus
Focus refers to a buff effect that requires a full Focus gauge to trigger. Depending on the character used, the Focus effect varies accordingly.

How this thing works: Force
Force refers to a powerful attack unique to the character using it. Force power deal the highest weapon damage compared to fast or heavy attacks. Force power can only be triggered when the Force gauge is full.

How this thing works: Thaumaturgy
Otherwise known as magic, Thaumaturgy is all about warping reality via one's imagination. However, thaumaturgy, as a power, is never one meant to create. Simply put, it can only alter what is already there. More on this in a future post.
[Hint: Runes are involved]

Note: While thaumaturgy sounds like the concept of Marble Phantasm, the power level is actually much more limited. Marble Phantasm involves the reshaping/altering on an unlimited basis, thaumaturgy can only do this much. Or little for that matter.

How this thing works: Metallurgy
It's like reinforcing a material without technology. Simply put, it's also known as magic like thaumaturgy. metallurgy is all about increasing the durability of armour and weapons during combat. However, to use the power of metallurgy requires a medium. More on this in a future post.
[Hint: Runes are involved. Again]

Note: Metallurgy is indeed reinforcement magic pulled off by Nasu. However, only metal things are legit for my own version of the deal.

How this thing works: Elegy
The most powerful card in the hand of any character. Try imagining something like an A-bomb. That's how high the power level can go. Elegy is the act of subjugating reality under the heel of the user's inner world. Sounds like thaumaturgy? Well, try comparing Unlimited Blade Works with standard projection. Also, runes are not required.

Note: Elegy sounds like the concept of Reality Marble, but it's not really that straightforward. Without spoiling it, I can only say this much.

P.S: Need to eat dinner soon. Also, I need to do some gaming because 2x Guild Marks event for Neverwinter is ending at 10:30 pm @S'pore timezone.

Add P.S: At the risk of sounding terribly Japanese despite my identity as a S'porean Chinese, I may need to do a bit of 完全リコール for A Requiem From Winter Past. And no, it's not for the sake of impressing Aragaki Yui-san because I'm not cursed with delusional ambition.
